THE ART OF L1FE

"Fuck pain. Fuck heartbreak. I'm still in love with life." - Daniele Bolelli

WAR IS HELL

One of the most striking images of the Tao Te Ching comes from chapter 46:

When the world lacks the Tao

Warhorses give birth on the battlefield.

We can easily understand these lines when we realize that the Tao tradition is utterly opposed to war. Chaos and warfare rule the land when the world has lost the Tao. All horses are drafted into the military, including pregnant mares. As the battle drags on, they have no choice but to give birth on the battlefield. This paints the picture of suffering and misery like nothing else.

No one who truly understands these lines can be untouched by this image. Nor can anyone still pretend that the Tao sages never passed judgement on anything. They certainly spoke clearly on this subject: war is hell.

The Tao Today

These important lines are not just about wars at the national level, but also conflicts at the personal level. Let them serve as a reminder for you to promote peace in your everyday life. No one really benefits from fighting, and no one really wins. Seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts so you can get back to tilling your fields and being productive - a far more worthwhile activity.
